Happy New Year 2018!

What a year! Graduating from the BFA program at the University of Alberta has brought with it a new found freedom! Splitting my time between my home studio and the print studio at SNAP in Edmonton, AB is providing the right mix of community and solitude. Expressive approaches to image making is liberating! I look forward to a year of developing this abstracted language and showing my work! Happy New year everyone!

I started teaching with the City Arts Centre in Edmonton this summer. I taught a floral workshop to beginner painters in August and am currently teaching level 1 and 2 Acrylic Painting and Travel Journaling. The students are great to work with, all of them have been very enthusiastic about learning. I work at setting them up with the foundations of drawing and painting with the goal of having them be successful with incorporating creativity into their lives in what every they way they intend. It is really great to be a part of the students journey to creativity and art appreciation! I am so proud of every one of them!

Quite a bit of time has passed since my last post, so I figured I would update those of you who are still following my blog on what I have been up to. After graduating in the spring from the University of Alberta with a BFA, I jumped right into the Society of Northern Alberta Printmakers studio to start some printmaking projects. I also continued working on paintings, first having a rented space, but soon discovering I needed to have the painting part of my practice at home as I tend to work late into the night when I paint and did not need a forty five minute commute between me and my bed at the end of painting sessions.

Transitioning from three years of full time studies to professional art practice after Undergraduate studies has not been easy. I discovered I needed to heal, being kind to myself and allowing for a margin of time to discover new routines, new ways of seeing the world, and new ways of expressing my experiences. My work has shifted formally from representational to the abstract. I can not tell you how exhilarating it is to work in a way that is purely reactionary and expressive.

This blog has gone through many shifts, and now another shift is occurring. I will be sharing here my creative process, progress on projects, research and other things that feed into my creative practice. I invite you once again to join me as I work through life creativity.

Exhibition Announcement and a Long Overdue Update

The past year has been filled with full time studies at the University of Alberta. This experience has proved to be insightful as to my capacity for learning and stretching conceptual thought. One thing that has been a constant throughout last year and the year before has been meeting with a group of artist while studying the human figure. I am pleased to have an opportunity to show selected new figurative work that I have produced over the last two years with this group and in classes from this last year with my creative studies. Capturing the living breathing essence of being is proving to be a practice that is informing my artistic practice as a whole.

If you are in the area I hope you consider joining me and the other artist for the opening reception Thursday August 4th from 6 to 9pm at the VASA Gallery in St. Albert, AB.

Thank you for staying with me during this long break from posting. I look forward to sharing with you more frequently all that fuels my creative practice. This will include but not be limited to sketches, studies, photos, and quite possibly some of my creative non fiction writing and poetry!

All Together

All Together
Oil on Canvas

I get lost in the shadows and the light of still life paintings. The push and pull of light and shadow around the objects and the transparency and reflective surfaces created a wonderful playground within this still space.

My studies at the University of Alberta are coming to an end for this year. I enjoyed exploring new medium, developing a new language to express moments that I find captivating in this life.
I will post selected images of my work I do during my studies here, however I do look forward to posting new paintings as well.

I invite you to comment, let me know you are still interested in what I do.

Update and Exhibition Announcements

Hello all of my blog spot friends!

I hope you all had a great summer and are settling into the new fall routine. I have a lot of things going on that I wish to pass along in hopes that it inspires in some way.

I have been wanting to go back to school to get my degree in Fine Arts for quite some time now.
I applied for the fall term this year and got accepted in the the Bachelors of Arts program.
I will transfer into the the Bachelor of Fine Arts program and take on a more full time course load possibly as soon as next year.

For this fall term I am taking Drawing and Intermedia and English. For the winter term I will add to this course load an Art History. These courses I am in this term are proving to be very interesting. I am enjoying the experience of this learning environment. What an amazing place of diversity in culture and idea!

I also have a couple of show announcements!
